Requirements & minimum age

Bring original or certified documents (not photocopies) that establish:
- Proof of lawful presence/identity: a certified U.S. birth certificate (hospital certificates are not accepted), valid U.S. passport or passport card, Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization, Permanent Resident Card, or a foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and I-94.
- Proof of Social Security number: your Social Security card, or another accepted document that shows your full Social Security number.
- Two documents proving your South Dakota residential address, each showing your full name and address and dated within the past year (for example a utility bill, bank statement, pay stub, rent receipt, or vehicle registration); mail may be in your name or a parent's name.
- Parental consent for applicants under 18: a parent or legal guardian must sign the application in person at a driver exam station, or submit a notarized Parental Consent Form.
- A completed and signed driver license/permit application form.

What happens after you pass (graduated licensing)
The minimum age for an Instruction Permit is 14 and it must be held for 275 days before moving up to a Restricted Minor's Permit, or 180 days if you complete an approved driver education course, along with at least 50 hours of supervised driving. Passing an approved driver education course also waives the knowledge test.
